Are you qualified?
My son and my daughter are at the stage in their lives when they are applying to attend different universities; at the same time they are applying for jobs. For each of these places, there are necessary qualifications. Of course, they must be qualified to be accepted! It is the same for many things in life.
A person must be qualified for a certain job or career, whether it is in the military, or teaching in schools, to being a doctor. Qualifications are also needed if purchasing a home, or buying a car. This is attitude is so ingrained in us as a society, that we think the same way in spiritual matters, particularly about life after death! We ask ourselves, how can I qualify to have life after death? Do I qualify for life after death? What can I do to qualify for eternal life? This question is noth-ing new for mankind. Many people in the past have asked and wondered about this same question.
In fact, even in the days of Jesus, many came to him to ask, “What must I do to have life after death?” “How can I be qualified for eternal life?” Today, there are people like Nicodemus, who came by night to Jesus to find out what he needed to do; or the rich young ruler, who came to Jesus and asked what he should do to have eternal life; or even the multitude who asked Jesus what the work was that God desired them to do for eternal life. Like the people I just mentioned, many today think that they must do something to qualify for eternal life, or to enter into the kingdom of God! May I say to you that there is absolutely nothing that you and I can do to qualify us for eternal life or to enter into the kingdom of God. I am not saying that you cannot have eternal life, but there is no work that you and I can do for it! This is because we all have sinned and fallen away from God (Romans 3:23).
The Bible says that there is no one righteous, no not one (Romans 3:10). Of course, we can have eternal life, but it is not because of our own qualifications or our doing. Not at all!! On the cross, Jesus Himself did what needed to be done to qualify us for eternal life. What we need to do is just believe! That is exactly what Jesus said to the multitude, when they asked Him about eternal life. In John 6:29 Jesus said, “This is the work of God, that ye believe on Him whom He hath sent.” If you are still asking that question for yourself, this is the answer: just believe in Jesus, who did the work for you.
He completed the work for your salvation on the cross. Jesus did everything to qualify you for eternal life. All you have to do is to believe in Him and Him only. There is nothing else to do for your salvation! When you acknowledge that you are a sinner, and fully believe and trust Jesus for the forgiveness of your sin, you will be saved and have eternal life.
